Publish date: 2024-02-27

THE Great British Bake Off continued with Dairy Week in episode four, but Phil Thorne didn't make the cut with his baking skills and was consequently sent home.

Here is what you need to know about the baking enthusiast and star of Bake Off 2019.

Who is The Great British Bake Off 2019 contestant Phil?

Phil, 56, took up baking six years ago and now puts his culinary skills to the test four or five times a week.

The HGV driver, who grew up in Barking, first got a taste for baking during his home economics class at school.

Now, he lives in Rainham, with his wife and two daughters and treats his family and friends to some of his bakes.

In the last year, he has been working really hard on his decoration and piping techniques.

The father likes to share images of some of his bakes on his Instagram account here.

What has happened to Phil in Bake Off so far?

What has Phil said about The Great British Bake Off 2019?

Phil had to pinch himself when he arrived at The Great British Bake Off site, as he has wanted to be there for years.

Of his first week on the show, he said: “My memory of the first week is being minibussed into the site and seeing the tent, those wonderful white peaks and thinking that this is happening, it’s not just a dream.

“I have yearned for this for years, it’s amazing.”

After leaving the show the HGV driver said he fears he'll be remembered for his willy rocket cake in week one.

Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, he said: "I did cause a bit of a stir but I put that down to filthy minds.

“I was innocently making a rocket nose cone and I wanted to perfect it without any innuendo.”

Phil also said: "Dairy week. Curse the dairy week. Still, I had a good run. Such an amazing group of people. I loved every second of it."

When is The Great British Bake Off next on?

What is the Great British Bake Off prize?

With all the drama, sweat and tears that the dedicated bakers go through, you would expect they would be aiming for some grand cash prize, but the answer is no.

The winning prize is just flowers and a cake stand, at least that's what has happened so far.

Previous Bake Off contestant Martha Collison, who reached the quarter-finals in the 2014 series, confirmed to Barrelhouse: “Everyone is so surprised and thinks there must be some secret cash, but all we really get is a bunch of flowers and a cake stand.

“But then, you also kind of become a national treasure just by doing it because everyone in Britain loves the Bake Off so much.”
